Poetry is not always a spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions but often a mature reflection on life as well as the projection of exemplary figures from fiction, history and contemporary life held up for the inspiration and edification of present and future generations. It is also sometimes a critical observation on social and moral deviance for the improvement of mankind. The Swashbuckler and Other Poems deals with these diverse themes and several others more, ranging from self-expression, through direct social comment to the unmistakeable message which the denizens of immutable nature often speak in symbolic language to all generations. The poems are couched in a vast variety of poetic forms, inter alia the epic, the ode, the sonnet, elegy, allegory, and dramatic monologue and explore archetypal human passions and concerns which transcend place and time. The universe of discourse ranges temporally from classical antiquity to modern times and covers spatially contemporary and historical subjects and figures from diverse places including African, European and Asian nations and cultures. The generic and thematic diversity of this collection offers an inexhaustible buffet of aesthetic pleasure to all those interested in poetry including literary critics and aesthetes, students and connoisseurs of literature, and the average reader in search of poems which reflect his own life experiences.
