June 1941
Helen was born in Ellen Badge Hospital in hipton– on-Stour and only few days later she travelled with her mother to Coventry to face the height of the Blitz.
She lived there with her parents until 1945, when a horrifying incident took place in their cockroach infested bedsit. As a result of this, at the age of four, she went to live with her grandmother in Lancashire.
Helen quickly adapted to her new life with her grandmother who did her utmost to make her feel secure and at peace. Yet, there were times when Helen fretted for her parents and her twin sisters Jennifer and Jean back in Coventry.
By the age of twelve Helen and her grandmother had returned to Coventry to join her father who had rented rooms in his sister’s house. At last Helen’s life seemed to be complete, however she soon discovered that she would have to earn her keep by scrubbing floors (and again hear the pitter-patter of cockroaches on the lino floor in her bedroom).
The subsequent roller-coaster journey keeps the reader wanting to find out what happened to Helen next ...
