When it comes to writing a book it’s important to have the creative ‘juices’ flowing and no doubt your creativity will be in overdrive, however, this isn’t always a good thing! During this creative period you’ll no doubt have a whole wealth of ideas that you’re trying to contend with and pin down such as what genre should your book take? What narratoligical approach should you choose? If you’re writing a fiction book, should your main character be a man, a woman, a boy, a girl…or maybe even a dog? Should your book be set in the present, the past or the future? London or Cambridge…where should your story be set? See what we mean?

It’s important to take some time to plot out the content of your book, however, at New Generation Publishing we recommend going with what you’re passionate about. If you’re passionate about science fiction but your friends and family think you should write a romance novel (which you’re really unenthused by) then it’s going to be a good idea to go with the science fiction idea because writing a book is a long and arduous process; if you’re passionate about your book from the beginning you’re more likely to get it completed and to a high standard. If the idea behind your book doesn’t inspire you from the beginning, you’re unlikely to be motivated to give it your all when you’re sat at your desk at 1am with writer’s block!

Have you ever heard people advising a friend that when they’re going to university, or choosing a career, to pick something that they’re interested in? It’s much the same with writing a book. Ultimately, you will no doubt want to ensure that your text is marketable and will have an audience and therefore some moderations may be needed to make the copy appeal, however, we really believe that when it comes to self-publishing you should pick something that you’re passionate about and if you want to write a book narrated by a dog? Well, animal narratological books have worked in the past, just look at ‘Black Beauty’ since publication in in 1877-2008, it has sold over 50million copies and your self-publishing book narrated by a dog could do just the same..
